Karate

Karate was made in the 19th century in Ryukyu islands and now is in Okinawa, Japan. Karate means open-handed .There are over 50 million participators worldwide.  There are lots of worldwide competitions. Fighting in karate is called sparring.  In karate there are things called kata which are a bunch of different moves mixed together called forms and are used for warming up. The karate schools are called dojos. There are many different types of karate, almost every country has its own karate style.

Martial arts became more popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Karate can be practiced as a sport and as a combat sport and for self defence.  Karate training is divided into 3 parts, 1st  into kihon (basics or fundamentals) 2nd into kata (forms) 3rd into kumite (sparring).Kihon is karate styles focusing on kihon. It is done in pairs. Kata means shape and form. It is used for warming up and concentration training. Kumite is striking then blocking the strikes.
